The Basics.

Computers are really nothing more than a very powerful calculator with some great accessories. There not very intelligent devices.

So how do you tell a computer what to do?

Well a keyboard and a mouse are the standered way of interacting with a computer. Joysticks and game pads are used mostly for games.

How do i know the computer is doing something?

The monitor which is the screen shows you exactly what the computer is doing.

What is a modem?

A modem allows you to communicate with other computers using a phone line. Also a modem, E.G. virgin modem, allows you to connect to the internet.

What is Computer RAM and what does it do?

RAM – Random Access Memory, or volatile memory, is used by the system to store data for processing by a computer’s central processing unit (CPU), also known as the processor.

How does a computer saves data and programs?

Hard disk drives are an internal, higher capacity drive which also stores the operating system which runs when you power on the computer.
Printers
There are different types of printers (laser, ink jet, dot matrix) with differing quality of output. They are measured in dpi (dots per inch) and ppm (pages per minute), the higher the better.
